afaict the Untamed makes them even shipper so that must be Something.

It's interesting in terms of the worldbuilding too. By taking out all the explicit gayness they also took out the explicit homophobia, and then they have the Extremely Righteous Lan Sect Leader and the Extremely Status-Conscious Jin Sect Leader being constantly obviously in love with each other and not caring who knows about it. It makes it look like dramaverse is a much less homophobic world.

On the other hand, on a more meta level, there's something really annoying that the villain gets to be more obviously into his boyfriend than the protagonist does. Beh, censorship.

The Power of Love To Make Things Worse

I love how in The Untamed, pretty much every way of being in the world can make things worse. Love does, but so does marrying someone you don't love. Also: getting explosively angry, getting quietly angry, being forgiving of all wrongs, trying to help at great cost to oneself, trying to help in general, not trying to help and just looking out for one's own interests. The main cast is all so different from each other but they each find a way to mess things up that comes from who they are. I think the only people who manage to get through without actively making something worse are Mianmian and Baoshen Sanren, who both in different ways more or less just walk away. And the juniors, who had the good fortune not to live through a destructive war.

It's sort of bleak but it feels realistic to me.
