SLBP: Mitsunari sad end

waterscrollThe happy ending was happier than I expected, the sad ending was sadder than I expected.
I was expecting something more or less like what historically happened: he gets captured and executed. But no, they had to give him one last scene with the MC. So he escapes and is injured then after a heart-wrenching goodbye he turns himself in to Ieyasu in order as part of a treaty in which the MC and his allies will be spared. Because of course he does, because this dude can't possibly die in any other way than intentionally and premeditately sacrificing himself to save others.
And to add insult to all the emotional injury that this storyline is piling on me, he reincarnates as a history professor. Which I knew. But I was hoping he'd find some happiness and resolution in being able to step back from the traumas of his life and study them in academic terms. But no. Instead, he is bitter, lonely and obsessed with Hideyoshi. In the end when the MC finds him it is this wonderful, beautiful cathartic reunion, but it's also clear that they are exactly where they left off in terms of his issues that he needs to work out. The small mercy is, as reincarnated!Mitsunari points out, times have changed and maybe more things are possible now.
I'm very glad I did the happy ending first. But I can't help feeling like this game is laughing at me. I picked this route essentially at random - entirely based on my feelings about this historical character in a different game - and ended up with an angsty self-sacrificing bisexual polyamorous gender-ambiguous history professor. I'm feeling a little personally targeted here.
Fortunately so far the Hideyoshi route is so far the opposite of this, I'm four chapters in and it's mostly been watching him clown around and flirt and manipulate people. I imagine eventually it will get dark and terrible once he invades Korea for no good reason, but so far I'm giving this game the benefit of the doubt that it will handle that responsibly. And that's a while out yet.
