Ha, I have now started Episode 6 and once again all my theories are in disarray. Episode 5 was amazing though, a really clever deconstruction of the existing structure and the very concept of a murder mystery.

CW: Suicide. Domestic violence, kinda?

The weekly chat posts are intended for just that, chatting among each other. What are you currently watching? Reading? What actor/idol are you currently following? What are you looking forward to? Are you busy writing, creating art? Or did you have no time at all for anything, and are bemoaning that fact?

Whatever it is, talk to us about it here. Tell us what you liked or didn't like, and if you want to talk about spoilery things, please hide them under either of these codes:

♥ Okay I got two more alt brick trees, a maple and a pine, with a cherry tree on the way. Every scene needs more trees. And birds. (At least Lumibricks agrees with me about water; I appreciate that so much of their stuff includes a water feature.) I will have more nature in my plastic toy bricks.

♥ It seems I have an Easter cactus. One of my neighbors was getting rid of an unidentified succulent last year and offered it to me (somewhat apologetically, she thought it looked terrible) so I poured a bunch of water over it and left it on the back porch for a few months until winter came, then I brought it in and put it under a light. This week it started to bloom.

♥ The gardens are starting to look like something and I spent almost two hours watering today, so I definitely do not need any more plants, which is why we're only going to one plant sale this weekend. I think last year's intensive watering effort is paying off: some of the things that hadn't grown in years are bigger, and some of the things I thought were goners are cheerfully waving their hopeful little leaves in the air.

♥ Since January, I've been taking some herbal stuff for focus and cognitive function, and I feel like it's significantly improved my ability to remember, focus on, and complete tasks. A few days ago I found some detailed to-do lists from last summer that made me realize my executive function has improved much more than I realized. It was surprising to find such solid evidence of change.

♥ evildea has shared his first 50-hour update from the lingopie challenge. He started about two weeks ahead of me and he remains about two weeks ahead of me. This is very motivating to me, since I feel like we're starting with similar Chinese levels. So it's like that t-shirt one of my basketball-loving classmates used to wear in middle school:

"Somewhere someone is practicing while I'm stuck in school. One day I will meet him in head to head competition, and he will beat me."

Jia you.

Happy belated 520 Day, everyone!

Our annual Guardian Reverse Exchange revealed two days ago, and our collection is full of gorgeous works! We have a whole bounty of drama and novel works, fanfic, fanart, podfic and vids this year. So happy-making! :D

My own exchange experience this year is all Ya Qing-centric, yay! I received a delightful Ya Qing vid from [personal profile] amedia:
These Boots [General]
Characters/Relationships: Ya Qing & Zhu Jiu, Ya Qing & Wang Xiangyang, Ya Qing & Ye Zun, Ya Qing & Ying Chun
Content Tags: Celebrating BAMF!Ya Qing, 520 Day Guardian Reverse Exchange 2026, Prompt Fill, Gift vid, Fanvids, Short vid (just over a minute)

Summary: Ya Qing is SO DONE with all her co-conspirators.

And I wrote a Ya Qing/Zhu Hong fic myself, for [personal profile] plingo_kat:
Unwritten (3,017 words) [Teen]
Relationship: Ya Qing/Zhu Hong
Characters: Ya Qing, Zhu Hong, Ying Chun, Snake Tribe's Fourth Uncle
Content Tags: Post-Canon, Post-Fix-It, Guardian Treaty, Yashou Worldbuilding, Yashou History, Fu You's Legacy, High Chief Zhu Hong, Pre-ship, First Kiss

Summary: It's foolish to have a quarrel with a dead woman, but Ya Qing does. She's had it for years, ever since she began to realise how much the Guardian Treaty and Yashou neutrality were holding her people back. Fu You's legacy looms large among all the Yashou tribes, and everything Ya Qing did was to try and escape it.

This week's prompt is: Jinlintai.

You have until midnight your time on Friday, May 29, to answer this prompt. Please post your fills of the prompt as separate entries to the community (i.e. not replies to this entry), tagged with the prompt tag. You may post multiple standalone drabbles per entry in addition to drabble sequences and series.

As a reminder, this community has no official presence elsewhere. You are encouraged to share the prompt on social media, if you so desire. It may take me a bit to create the AO3 collection, so please be patient.

Also, I'm going to go ahead and drop a link to the prompt suggestions post here. New suggestions are always, always welcome.

My Episode 1 post is pretty dry and full of details, because I mostly engaged with it as a murder mystery puzzle and world setup. Episode 2 has more about characters and feelings, and is where I got more attached to those aspects. It's also where things start to get Surprisingly Weird.

Halfway through writing this post I had an EPIPHANY and now have a THEORY. I have written it upo in my Theory Post, which will come after I have written up Episodes 1-5 since it draws on all of them.

I just finished Episode 5, and kind of want to finish writing everything up before Episode 6 throws all my ideas out the window, but also I want to see what happens next!!

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fics/fanvids/fancrafts/fanart/other kinds of fanworks/podfics have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

I haven't posted in more than 2 months because my sciatica pain got to be this constant low-level pain that drained my life force. I started doing PT, it got WORSE. Finally last week the ortho gave me a shot that *helped*, I feel MUCH better, I'm going to try to get back to Purrcy posting.

Behold the morning trap! so loving, so fluffy, so dangerous:
Purrcy the tuxedo tabby curls to exhibit his fluffy tummy, his white bunny paws. He gazes lovingly at the photographer, as if this isn't a trap

Those of you who do daily home glucose testing, how do you dispose of your sharps? Dirk & Beth now have to do this, I'm setting up testing stations for them.

I have book posting, too, but that's getting so long I'll make it a separate post.

If you're like us, that means it's time to get some last-minute edits in. (You can find your entry via your Statistics page on AO3.) If you're not like us, congrats, and what's your secret? *g*

Only one more day to wait! *gets ready to break out the champagne[1]*

Masterlist.

I started writing a "short summary" for people who haven't played and to get my thoughts in order, then realised it was (a) getting long and (b) would be easier if I looked up a plot summary to remind myself. So lets go episode by episode until I finish or get bored haha. You can also just read the wiki page I referenced yourself but mine is shorter, if you can believe it, and has a few extra thoughts.

I mostly go through the mystery stuff, there's a bunch of humour and character moments which aren't captured in this summary. I'll avoid anything that significantly spoils later Episodes until a later post, but will not be super strict when it feels more logical to mention things now, or if I have current speculation that I either did or could have come up with at the time.

Please do not leave any comments which spoil past episode 1! I have played up to partway through Episode 5 but some people reading might not have.

A classic update with all my favorite things!

♥ pupdate: Daphne has an appointment for dental surgery on May 28. I was going to ask if I could stay with her while she was sedated (pre-anesthesia) and my vet suggested it first, so yay for the best vet, whom I started seeing when I had Whinnie. (I think she was the third vet I tried, looking for someone who would take me seriously when I said, "this dog is fear aggressive and will bite you harder if you try to muzzle her, can I hold her for you?" This vet was the first person who was like, "okay, let's try it." Mimi was an angel, but now I'm back with another un-handleable rescue and I am always so grateful to people who listen when I tell them things.)

♥ garden news: We went to TWO plant sales over the weekend, one where I got a bunch of sun-hungry plants for the fence and one where I ended up with a bunch of shade-tolerant, rabbit-resistant plants for the front. I planted all of them yesterday, plus the canna bed out back today, and I am actually, not gonna lie, a little sick of gardening. (That should last a few hours. It's supposed to be hot tomorrow, so I watered half the new stuff again tonight in preparation and will try to water the other half tomorrow morning before the sun hits them.)

♥ dollhouse adjacent: I knew I was tired of gardening when rearranging my lego jianghu suddenly seemed like the most fun anyone could have. I moved the reunion dinner away from the mountain and put it next to the fountain garden, filling the space in front of the mountain with dragon boats instead. The reunion dinner scene is 2cm shorter than the fountain garden, so I'm going to try to make a base for it out of some unused bonsai container pieces. (I keep getting bonsai trees for the trees, so I have less use for the containers and platforms, no matter how pretty. "Why aren't there battle packs for trees?")

I also, somewhat belatedly, realized that the "friends" botanical garden appears to contain exactly half the pieces for a complete building, which means that a second set might improve the scene? Reddit and rebrickable say yes, so when I stop spending money on plants I might collect a few more legos.

♥ chinese: Thank you super challenge for making me read more, and thank you DuChinese for making Sun Wukong more interesting than just Journey to the West. (I'm sure someday I'll be like, "yeah, Journey to the West is great!" but so far what I know about it is that a lot of people keep almost or actually dying.) Anyway, Sun Wukong's origin story makes my "flower fruit mountain" lego set make so much more sense, and also it's funny: especially the Grand Nagus moment when he grabs the "book of life and death" from the king of the underworld, reads it, and is like, "You just wrote this yourself, didn't you. And everyone follows it? Well, give me a pen!"

Grand Nagus: "The Rules of Acquisition are more like suggestions. They're written in a book, not carved in stone. And even if they were, who cares? A bunch of us just made them up anyway."

Quark: "Then why are they called rules?"

Grand Nagus: "Would you buy a book called The Suggestions of Acquisition? Rule #239, never be afraid to mislabel a product!"

Umineko: When they Cry

I've been watching a Let's Play of the classic, epic Japanese visual novel "Umineko: When they Cry" by Ryukishi07, and am currently up to Episode 5 of 8. I'm quite enjoying it but it's LONG. The LP is 168 episodes which are 30 minutes to two hours long.

I'll try and write a proper review when I'm finally done, since the story keeps reinventing itself, but so far it's a family drama and murder mystery with supernatural elements, which explores events from different angles in ways which cleverly play around with narrative, both from a storytelling perspective and as a way of exploring how people view the world and each other in different ways.

It's very much worth going into unspoiled if you are interested. But content warnings for violence and gore (mostly just text), suicide, child abuse (well written but harrowing), gender essentialism, male gazey character designs and and "joking" perviness (sometimes condoned by the narrative, though it's better about female characters than you might initially assume)

No unambiguous consent issues so far asides from some rape jokes but it feels like the kind of story where that could definitely be a Thing.

I'm watching Jokrono's let's play, which involves two young male gamers sometimes being thoughtlessly Unfortunate, especially about Japan. I'm sure there's others out there but this is the one I was recced and I'm overall enjoying it.

Just cut for length, no spoilers )

Hi,

this is the weekly chat post again. Do you have any Star Wars news, thoughts, or feels?

As I noted in my last post, the wide-ranging mind of Matt Hills could not be constrained to a single quote.  Last week, he gave us a quote for fan studies; this week, he gives us his go-to piece of criticism for thinking about Doctor Who, about which he has both written a monograph, Triumph of a Time Lord: Regenerating Doctor Who in the Twenty-first Century  (2010), and co-edited a collection of essays, Adventures Across Space and Time: A Doctor Who Reader.  (2023) – FC

~ ~ ~

The ‘merchandised reading’ of Who in the 1970s was wildly uneven. Often aimed at primary school children, comic strips, jigsaws, books and toys reworked the programme as a very basic adventure story, shearing it of its themes and complexities. The Doctor would routinely be referred to as ‘Doctor Who’ as if it were the character’s name (it is not, that is the title of the programme). In/on merchandise, the programme might be referred to as Dr. Who… whereas the televised version has never used the contracted form. The Doctor would also be shorn of his ethical nature, routinely blowing up or killing aliens without a thought or scruple. Daleks, themselves often reduced to the status of simple killer robots, would be depicted in garish primary colours which rarely bedecked their on-screen counterparts. (Booy 2012: 13)

In terms of work on Doctor Who, then, I have a soft spot for Miles Booy’s (2012) Love & Monsters: The Doctor Who Experience, 1979 to the Present. This analyses what it has meant to be a UK-based Doctor Who fan across a period of time that largely coincides with my own experience of the fandom, focusing on tie-in and spin-off publications rather than the central text, and covering fan-consumed materials that are surprisingly rarely theorised and discussed, such as the original Doctor Who Weekly comic that became today’s Doctor Who Magazine via a series of metamorphoses. Booy’s work is great for reminding us, and reminding me, how much of fandom can still be about specialist, niche or licensed publications as well as fanfic and fan art and so on.
